University Park is a separate municipality, incorporated in 1924 and surrounded by the city of Dallas and the town of Highland Park, so it runs its own police and fire departments. The Southern Methodist University campus sits inside its boundaries and accounts for a substantial share of the city's land area. The street grid was platted in the 1920s and 1930s, and much of the original prewar housing has been replaced by new construction on the same lot dimensions. Highland Park ISD is the taxing school district.
University Park sits in Dallas County, where the combined property tax rate runs about 2.15 percent of market value for the 2025 tax year, ranging 1.95 to 2.60 percent depending on the school district. On a $350,000 home with a homestead exemption that works out to roughly $505 a month.
