Highland Park is a separate town, incorporated in 1913, that resisted annexation by Dallas for decades and is now bordered by Dallas and University Park. Turtle Creek winds through it, and the town's parks, including Lakeside Park, follow the creek. Highland Park Village, built in 1931 at Preston Road and Mockingbird Lane, was among the first planned shopping centers in the United States. Housing is largely 1910s through 1930s construction on the original plat, with extensive teardown and rebuild activity in recent decades. Highland Park ISD is the taxing district.
