Quinlan sits on SH 34 between Greenville and Terrell, with SH 276 running west toward Rockwall and Lake Tawakoni a few miles east. It began as a depot town in 1892 on the Texas Midland Railroad, a line reorganized by the financier Hetty Green. The city covers just over a square mile, and the surrounding market runs to rural acreage and lake property rather than platted subdivisions, including leasehold lots on Sabine River Authority shoreline. Growth followed the reservoir rather than the Dallas commute, and Quinlan ISD and Boles ISD both serve the area.
