Burleson sits about fourteen miles south of Fort Worth on I-35W, with US 81 and SH 174 running through it. The city straddles the Johnson and Tarrant county line, and its limits stretch southeast in a narrow corridor along the interstate toward Alvarado, so the county of record and the taxing jurisdictions can change within one city. Old Town Burleson holds the original commercial core, while most of the housing stock came later. Burleson ISD covers much of the city but not all of it.
