Coppell is boxed in by DFW International Airport on the west, SH 121 on the north, and Irving on the south, leaving the city little room to expand. It was a farming town until the airport opened in 1974, and the great majority of its housing went up between the mid-1980s and the early 2000s, so the stock is unusually uniform in age and construction type. A narrow strip at the north end crosses into Denton County, where Lewisville ISD takes over from Coppell ISD.
