Mesquite sits east of Dallas where US 80 leaves the I-635 loop. The Mesquite Arena beside I-635 has hosted the Mesquite Championship Rodeo since 1985, and the Legislature named the city the Rodeo Capital of Texas in 1993. Town East Mall anchors the commercial spine near I-30, and most housing around it went up between the 1950s and the 1970s, with newer subdivisions pushing east toward the Kaufman County line. Mesquite ISD covers most of the city.
